What I’m doing now…

Derek Sivers started the now page movement; seemed like a good idea to me!

Family

I’m currently very happily married to my beautiful wife Kristine. We have 5 amazing children ages 5-15 and they definitely keep us busy! We live in Spanish Fork, UT and we like to spend time putting together jigsaw puzzles and are trying to get more into hiking outdoors. Last summer we hiked to the Y and then did a couple other little hikes with the kids. We really enjoyed it and now that our youngest is able to walk more we hope to keep doing it more.

To stay in shape, Kristine and I have recently started going on walks around the neighborhood and I’ve found that it gives us a chance to talk (although I do too much talking about work right now) and also get away from the kids for a few minutes.

Kids activities (soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, piano and violin to name a few) keep us pretty busy, although the pandemic was a nice reset for us to decide how much running around we want to do we did seem to bring things back in force.

Work – Technical Operations Consulting

In April, I did the thing I’ve been contemplating for over 10 years. I quit my job and went full time into consulting. I have been working a lot with Nomatic lately and that has been a blast. It was a great transition to move from a company that culture was important, to work for another company that cares about their employees and culture. While I am only a contract worker I have felt the love and it has been a great experience. I’m working on some other projects of my own and now that school is back in session I’m looking for another company or two that are interested in some technical operations strategy help.

Work – BambooHR no longer

I think I’m breaking the rules for the “now” page by putting something in that I’m not working on anymore, but this was such a big part of my life and career I wanted to leave it in here for now. I worked for BambooHR for more than 7 1/2 years! It was such an amazing opportunity, but all good things must come to an end. The team has grown so much and it was the right time for me to hand the reigns to their capable hands. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. I had such a fun opportunity working in all of the operations teams (marketing, sales, customer experience, and technical operations) and I learned so much while I was there. I absolutely love the company, the culture, the people, and the projects I got to work on, and now I am cheering them on from the outside!

Side Projects?

For years I have been doing side projects. I found it is my creative outlet when work has become more too stressful. It is sometimes hard to make changes in a larger organization but in a small piece of code or an app you can be more agile. Now that I’m doing my own thing I’m not sure what will constitute a side project but for now, if it isn’t my main income stream, I guess I’ll call it a side project.

KidText.me

KidText is an android and iOS app that allows parents to enable texting to only approved phone numbers. This app allows the parents to add in approved phone numbers as well as approve other KidText users in other families so kids can talk together. Unfortunately, as the app stores have changed over the last few years, the app will need a complete rewrite if it is going to continue long term. I haven’t decided that I’m quite ready to kill it yet but I’m afraid it isn’t going to be worth the work needed to make the changes. It still works for now, and while it isn’t really making money, I’m not losing money on it yet so I’ll keep it around for now.
